DATE: October 22nd at 6 p.m.

In the district of Gracia, where about ninety shelters were built, we find the famous Plaça del Diamant. This shelter was rediscovered in 1992 thanks to the construction of an electric station and a historian who had evidence of its existence and, after various recovery works, was reopened in 2006 to the public. The humidity and temperature have allowed this shelter to be one of the most well preserved.

With a capacity for 200 people and sunk 12 meters underground, there are about 250 meters of narrow tunnels that run through the subsoil of the square and the street of les Guilleries. The walls and roof are made of bricks and you can still see the toilets of the shelter in Joanic square, the stone benches, the infirmary and even the smoke marks of the candles that the neighbors used to carry for light when they entered the shelter after hearing the siren of one of the nearby factories that alerted them of an imminent bombing.

COMPLEMENTARY TOUR “EPISODES OF THE CIVIL WAR IN GRACIA”.

Although Gracia was not one of the neighborhoods hardest hit by the bombings, the neighborhood also suffered the ravages of the war and the subsequent repression. During the second part of the visit we will have the opportunity to discover some episodes related to the civil war in Gracia.
